Week 12: The Last Hurrah!

Welcome to the last week of Learn and Earn! Brandon and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you over the course of the past three months. Each week we continued to be impressed with the insightful and thorough comments you offered in response to the assignment and in response to each other. Your engagement in this effort really exemplifies Tahoma teachers as lifelong learners and risk takers. We hope it has been a worthwhile experience for you.

A couple housekeeping issues:
For those of you taking this class for clock hours, soon we will be sending out the paperwork for you to fill out and return.

Also, don’t forget, this Thursday from 3:30-5:30 we’ll be hosting a fact-to-face session in the Teaching and Learning Library. Just drop by for as long as you want to get help with a project, make up a missing “assignment,” etc. Yes, there will be after school snacks.

This week, for your last “assignment” we’re asking two things:

1. Go back to one or two previous posts and take a look at your classmates’ comments. Choose one or two of these comments to respond to by answering someone’s question, providing your perspective on someone’s idea, offering a suggestion, etc.

2. Provide your feedback about the class using the form below.

Last week (the WallWisher post) Anne Hobson said: We used the "wall" for brainstorming the tasks we still needed to accomplish for the Key Club annual fundraising run, Sprint into Spring, for Children's Hospital. Officers added posts when they thought of items or if they completed tasks. We debriefed about it; they liked the concept and visual, but most agreed that quick texts back and forth were more timely. I like the site.

*I asked my first period class what they liked or didn't like about having to post for homework on an assignment rather than our usual approach. They also liked that it was visual, and they could see what others wrote. A few students said they liked it more because they could do it from their cell phones (digital backpack :) !) A couple of kids said they liked handwriting it more. I think I had more students post their response on the wall than those who would normally do the homework if it were handwritten.

Here at TMS we have been taking about our late work policy with each other. Renee Stroup and Laura Bennett used WallWisher and posted the question on their Swift Site; Renee's question for the parents; What do you think about our late work policy at TMS? Laura's question was to the students. This information from these post has helped us understand what parents and students think about this policy.

Hard to believe that 12 weeks is over already...it was interesting learning these new sites even though it is only scratching the surface. I looked back at a few of the Wallwisher boards. I checked out the posts on Renee Stroup's & Laura Bennett because they were on the same topic (late work policy at TMS). It was interesting to read the posts from parents. Their voice was loud and clear that students should be held accountable to deadlines..they need to learn to be responsible and lose points for late work if it is accepted.

The students main point was that Friday school is a bad thing...big surprise! LOL Some students expressed that accepting late work is not fair to those who turned their work in on time but overall they said the policy should continue and allow for the extra few days for late week with points taken away. It was also interesting that they said teachers needed to be strict about adhering to the policy.

Learned a great deal with this class. One comment to the teachers is to Penny Blair. She asked when we did the Google Documents website how we would administer the document to our students. Well I would put the website on my swift account and instruct my students to go to my swift account then documents and then follow the instructions on my documents page. I have used this tool and I get a lot of good feedback via using it. Again thanks for the past 12 weeks. Sure went fast. ~ Marie Page

Excellent, this would be an easy way to get information for both students and parents.

thank you Marie! I did use the Swift account to publish the link on events. Many students used it.

i felt like i learned something every week but i haven't had time to really implement anything so i am aware of alot of new things but not good at any of it!
i would like to use the wallwisher with students. because of the classes i teach there are no computers in the room so asking them to brinstorm online puts off the spontinatety of the process for me, so i have to figure out something that they will do at home that makes sense for me.
I feel the same way as Suzanne. I have learned somehting new each week, it's just taking the time to implement it and for me, to probably relearn it. I did use learner.org though, so if I would make myself sit down and look at how I could implement more tools I would be able to do it. I think they have all been great and I have learned alot about what's out there and that I need to add some variety.

It is hared to belive that 12 weeks is already over. I have learned about a lot of new sites that I had no idea about. Now I need to take the time to figure out how I could use some of them - maybe after the year is over when I have more time to "play" with them. I have also enjoyed reading all the postings and how people have used the sites in thier classrooms. It is going to be interesting to see if students become more engaged in the classroom as teachers begin to incorporate more of these tools into their curriculum.

I agree with you - I'm really looking forward to going back this summer and exploring more - especially with Google. There is so much to learn and I've loved the exchange of ideas, but I haven't nearly read everything that's been posted! Two things that have impacted my teaching THIS spring, though, have been Google Earth and the session on Fair Use and Creative Commons. While kids weren't particularly engaged in the Fair Use/CC discussion we had, they appreciated that there is a "right" way to use the material found on the web and I know they felt it was a relevant topic. Google Earth is just plain cool no matter who you are! As I explore, I know I'll incorporate more into my curriculum!

I have been scrolling back through the weeks and comments. I knew it at the time, and now have been reminded, THIS WAS REALLY INTERESTING! I don't have the experience yet to offer anything to anyone who has taken this class, but I can offer suggestions to colleagues who might be looking for something. I enjoy reading comments and suggestions and seeing the work others have done. It takes a lot of time. Managing everthing is always an issue. How do we keep all the balls in the air?

I really liked what Abby Smith did with her wallwisher- she had students put in acedmic goals fro themselves. I'm think I could do that by period at the beginning of the year (and have them reflect on how well they did at the end) and/or I could have them do them right before a big test or project (I was thinking MSP). Getting them to think about how they want to do is half the battle and this is a cool tool to use for it!
I have been exposed to a ton of new technology resources that I can use in my classes. I am excited to get more practice with some of them and to be able to acutally use them with students.

Jennifer Roesch- I would be excited to see how your kids use google maps. I bet it would be really neat for them to use in preparation for their trips downtown.
Marie- that is super cool that you have been able to try out that google documents with your students on your website. It sounds like it worked out pretty well. I bet the kids like it too since they can read what each other wrote.
