Week 11: Great Idea! Put It on a Post-It Note

Wallwisher is a website which allows users to post messages on an electronic bulletin board. This website gives you the ability to post a question and easily get feedback from your co-workers or students. Here are some suggestions for using Wallwisher:
  • Brainstorm ideas before a unit (What do you know about the Great Depression?)
  • Get ideas from staff about best teaching practices.
  • Kids could post “sticky notes” recommending their favorite book.
  • Answer a specific question: What types of mammals live in Washington State?
Your task for this week is to create a Wallwisher board. You may choose adults or students to respond. Once you create a board, you’ll need to either email or post the link to your SWIFT site. Instructions are on SharePoint, if you need them: How to Create a Wall for Student Comments

Assignment: In your comment below, please post the URL of your Wallwisher board (so we can click over and check it out--we won't participate unless you tell us to) along with any ideas or comments you might have regarding use of this tool.

P.S. Starting last night some teachers started having difficulty posting their comments. I'm not sure why this is happening since I can't recreate the problem from my computer. If you have troubles, AND they persist after shutting down and restarting, please let me know.

http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/TahomaFFA - My URl is this one. It was a bit confussing at first to create the wall. I just had issues with my board, but the directions were on target. I sent my question to a few adults out there so I hope that they respond. This is a neat site and I can see I would use it for my plant sale suggestions, my club - Tahoma FFA asking questions and much more. Good Suggestion of a new site. I willl use this. ~ Marie Page

I made my wall and assigned students to respond to a prompt. I asked them to make 3 academic goals for themselves to work toward reaching between now and the end of the year. I like the website and think I will use it in the future, as well. I think it would be fun to use in the fall with new students. I can see myself using this site again, but what I wonder about is if I can keep the same page and ‘erase’ the notes that kids have posted and start fresh with a new prompt. In doing this I’d hope to avoid creating many pages and just leave them out there to never use again. At any rate, students enjoyed making their posts yesterday and one student took it upon himself to research how to make a post and add an image to it. What a great tool. I like the ease of use and that students don't need an account. I asked some students to post responses to their peer's speeches on a wall (http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/speechresponse). I'm excited to see how they interact with each other and what kind of feedback they offer.

What most excites me about tools such as Wallwisher is that, as access increases and students work on computers almost daily, this will be a great way to do formative assessments and get a general idea of where students are at without having to grade exit slips.

To encourage my Foods and Nutrition class to start their extended learning project, I am assigning them to post their plan for this requirement of the class on the wall as of Thursday. I put a sample up for them to see. I hope they will "inspire" one another'. We will see. I posted this in announcements and will give students time in class to do it also. Did anyone have other ideas about where to include it on SWIFT? http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/exlrndinTHEME
I may use this with my family when we try to plan a get together too.

I will play with this. With such a small community of ELL students, I do not see my classes using this too much; however, I will keep it as a resource for future reference.

I assigned as homework for the weekend for students to post ONE event that happened in the last chapter of the story that we are currently reading in class (in French, of course!) Immediate reactions were good: I think it's a good way to check in with kids to see if they are doing the reading at home. They aren't allowed to repeat something another peer said, and they have to put their name if they want credit.

I'll check back in on Tuesday to let everyone know how many kids participated, what they thought, etc.

I created one. Things like this seem to take me longer than it should but I made one. I'm not sure how I will use it yet but it seems like a great tool to get students involved.

This is a fun site. It was easy to set up and I think students would enjoy using it. I teach math so I'm not sure how to use it but one idea might be to use it before a unit test and ask students to post about topics that they aren't as comfortable about so we could do extra review.
We are starting to communicate with some students in South Korea using ePals as a cultural sharing piece in our Global Citizenship unit. I'll be asking my 1st period students to post something that they learned about South Korean culture from their ePal on this wall:

I love how easy it was to set up and connect to my Swift site for kids to use!
Here's my URL: http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/stillmaker. I made a wall for students to post technologies invented or innovated by the ancient Romans. I am curious to see what they remember. It will also give me ideas for their project coming up this week on ancient Roman technology reports.

I know I was surprised how easy it was to use from the other side when I posted an idea for the summer conference on Kimberly's wall earlier this month.

THis year I have really emphasized thinking about assignments and what students have gained form them. I usually focus on something different from each project we do. For example, it can be about their own processing strategies, the concept(s) learned or simply about the "why" of such a project. This is what I have done for this Wallwisher assignment: http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/CollageEnfance

I like how it is more like a game than emailing, or a message board. I think students will enjoiy using it as well.

Every year we have a discussion about late work and how to handle students who turn work in late. My wallwisher asks students their opinion on our current late work policy and any changes they would make.

This was cool. I tried uploading my own picture and it didn't work. Any suggestions Kim? The picture file was a jpeg so not sure why it didn't work.

I can think of many uses of Wallwisher in the library - favorite book (Kimberly's suggestion above), responses to a book, if you like... then you'll like...., but the one I created is for our next Amazon order. We constantly order from Amazon for things students need in a hurry. Wallwisher is a great way to keep track of which books students want. http://www.wallwisher.com/wall/tahomhslibrary

i really had trouble signing up---i couldn't get it to work but then mysteiously it said i had an account. the only way i can think to use this would be with my traffic safety class--asking them to respond to their drives and post comments on what they need to work on or how i might help them.
i would like to attach it to a skyward assignment if possible.

Okay. This is a very timely tool because I just had a meeting with Nancy Skerrit last week about getting some feedback from students on upcoming units. I have posted my first on WallWisher. We'll see how it goes.

I did mine for parents to comment on our late work policy, what do they like, not like, etc. Laura Bennett did her's with the same question but done towards students. When we're done we're hoping to be able to compare the data we learned. What a great idea!

We used the "wall" for brainstorming the tasks we still needed to accomplish for the Key Club annual fundraising run, Sprint into Spring, for Children's Hospital. Officers added posts when they thought of items or if they completed tasks. We debriefed about it; they liked the concept and visual, but most agreed that quick texts back and forth were more timely. I like the site.

I decided to have students comment on the books they have for their Readers' Workshop units. Unfortunately, I want to be able to give them some time to get a strong impression of the book prior to posting. Of course, there is the option of having them create a response now and then another response when they have finished the book. If there are differences in their opinions, particularly from unfavorable to favorable, then it might encourage students to choose a book and stick with it. My hope is that students next year will be able to access the wall as another step in choosing their books.

I saw a demonstration of wallwisher last week and thought it was an interesting idea so I was excited to try it. For some reason I had trouble with it. I created a wall and when I put in my email address it said that address was already in use so after a couple of tries I gave up. My problems might have occurred because I was trying to use it on a Sunday night after a fun but long weekend. I was thinking it would be kind of fun to have students leave their thoughts about completing the State Reading test on-line this year. If I can figure out how to access my wall again, I would like to try it out with the students.
